Improvement

If we aspire to ambitious goals for improvement, we have to view our improvement work as a daily experiment, testing & learning all the time. We also need be outward looking, being out there on the edge of knowledge, learning from & with others. Great graphic from @OzolinsJanis
The Continuing Healthcare Collaborative helped produce better outcomes, better experience and better use of resources - many benefits for staff and the people they care for. Discover what they did & how they did it in this blog by @DianeKetley  #nhsspread

In health & care, we're often very good at starting new things but very bad at stopping existing things that no longer work as well. The return on investment (ROI) from quitting doing old "wrong" things is often higher than the ROI from doing new "right" things. TY @OzolinsJanis

Helen's email signature has a "quote of the month". August is by Mary Parker Follett.  She said collective impact - working toward a common goal, solving shared problems - is fundamentally a relational activity. TY @MicheleZanini for a great article on Follett.

System Convening

System convening and the spread and adoption of innovations and improvement: a short video describing this enabling leadership activity @HorizonsNHS @SysConvening @theQCommunity@HelenBevanTweet

Helen wrote a foreword for this new eBook on Systems Convening - a crucial form of leadership. From this website, you can download a digital copy from 5 Aug & sign up for the launch on 2 Sept - all free.
What does "working to change the system" mean? 1) Working in diverse groups to 2) understand the system’s layers -mental models/structures/patterns/events 3) creating shared purpose & 4) finding high-leverage places for collaborative action. V @GarfieldFdn

Leadership

"Matrix management" often fails to live up to its promise. Five ways to build a healthy matrix culture: 1) assume everyone has positive intent 2) build matrix working skills 3) tolerate ambiguity 4) give role clarity 5) take a whole system view. V @RonCarucci
In a world where we're moving beyond leading single organisations or teams, we must give attention to creating co-leadership across systems. It's much more about interpersonal processes than structural measures. Multiple CEOs, no drama. V @INSEADKnowledge
