The School for Change Agents
This week we ran the FINAL live #S4CA session with Helen Bevan and Kathryn Perera - we spoke about the bigger picture of change agency:
If you are participating in school or curious about what it's about have a listen to our Agents Assemble podcast. Take a listen at anchor.fm or wherever you get your podcasts!
#VirtualCollaborate
As we evolve towards new ways of working, e.g. some team members may be face to face & others virtual, how do we meet the fundamental human needs of everyone? How do we build trust, hope, sense of worth & competence into the team's daily work? Image: Tanmay Vora.
10 things about hybrid working. It's: 1) good for orgs; 2) multidimensional; 3) makes you discuss culture; & needs: 4) standard tools; 5) listening culture; 6) wellbeing focus; 7) better leadership; 8) security; 9) experimentation;10) trust.
Five elements of good meeting facilitation. Effective facilitation is as key for virtual meetings as for face to face. Sketch note from Hayley Lewis: an excellent summary of "The surprising science of meetings" by Steven G. Rogelberg.
Social Influence
When it comes to Twitter, our people are the voice of our organisations. Our data shows NHS people are often 10x more influential on Twitter than corporate accounts. Make your people your social media champions rather than restrict their use of it at work.
Productivity
What does it look like to embrace goals that are big enough? When we take our purpose to a higher level & build shared goals with others to achieve it, magic happens. Image: Sherrill Knezel.
People intending to undertake a hard task, end up not doing it 65% of the time. To increase the likelihood of follow through: 1) Tell people your plan; 2) Create accountability; 3) Include others; 4) Practice; 5) Connect with purpose
Taking breaks at work is critical if we want to avoid decision fatigue. Behaviours that might seem like “slacking” may actually be useful devices for staying productive. This applies whether we are working remotely or face to face.
Leadership
A good summary of the book Humanocracy from Marcella Bremer. She quotes from the "hierarchy of capabilities" that's in the book. If leaders could support people to move up the pyramid, we could eliminate half the compliance load in a typical organisation
Helen shared that she is often asked "what's the most important thing to do to start change happening?" It's this. Data & planning are key, but we have to start by connecting to values through emotions. That's why leaders need to be storytellers.
Our leadership behaviours increase the dangers of burnout for our teams. Circumstances may force us into red leadership - which risks the wellbeing of our teams. Green leadership leads to well-functioning teams. By psychologist & HR/OD leader Dr Sonya Wallbank.
Covid-19 and recovery
Over the past 15 months, we've been navigating the same storm but we're all in different boats, in terms of how we experienced the storm, obstacles, power & opportunities. We have to listen to others & show compassion & understanding. Graphic: Julie Woodard
The shift from pandemic to post-pandemic is unleashing a lot of pent-up demand, which means people are getting asked to pack even more tasks into their days. Ten things to say besides "yes", for the next time you get asked to do extra work.
