#Caring4NHSPeople & #ProjectM

December's wellbeing session was held this week. It focused on how managers and leaders can support each other, with an overview of the support available through #ProjectM. You can find out more about what happened through reading the Twitter thread, or watching the recording

The next wellbeing session is on Wednesday 13 January 2021 at 4pm. There's also another #ProjectM tweet chat on Tuesday 5 January 2021 at 7pm.

It's week two of the Winter 2020 Countdown Calendar, signposting to the support on offer to all of #OurNHSPeople as we embark on the largest vaccination programme in history. What better way to say #ThankYouNHS.

Wellbeing & Support

As leaders, we flame-out because consequences come slowly. Neglecting our teams doesn’t bite us at once; chasing urgent instead of priority or working long hours works for a while. We need to manage our energy, not our time. Read this post to find out how.

Ever felt like you can’t do something, or that you’ll mess it up? Cognitive reframing of your emotion, your attitude, behaviour, and outcome can help you approach the things that make us feel nervous with more confidence.  Beautifully described by @Haypsych in this sketchnote.
Gratitude is good for our health & for society. Here are 6 insights from science. Gratitude: 1) makes us feel more connected; 2) makes us more generous; 3) comes from the heart; 4) can be learnt; 5) relieves stress; 6) isn't always appropriate:
Important paper from @kieran_walshe and others on the status & identity of locum doctors. Their experience is like that of other temp workers, eg, marginalised, stigmatised & little training & development. Brings home the importance of "belonging".

Safety and Improvement

Be Kind, Take The Time To Celebrate Excellence with two inspirational #GREATix stories from @NickyGasgirl  and @__DanR__ .

"The courage to be kind: reflecting on the role of kindness in the healthcare response to #COVID19". An inspiring report by @CarnegieUKTrust . Based on Scottish NHS experience but relevant to those in health & care systems everywhere.

Three decades ago, when Helen first learnt about quality improvement & safety, she learnt James Reason's powerful "swiss cheese" model for avoiding patient harm. It's great to see it back in the context of defence against #Covid19:

Stanford Behaviour Design Lab has just published its phase 1 project report on the global challenge of optimising COVID-19 vaccination rates:

As we seek to make change happen more quickly at bigger scale, across our organisations & systems, we're creating more cross-organisational or cross functional change teams. They fail more often than they work. Here's why & what to do about it.

Leadership and Teams

New from Harvard Business Review: Compassionate leadership is important but on its own, it is insufficient. We also need wise compassion, based on leadership competence, a deep understanding of what motivates people & how to manage others to deliver agreed priorities.

Often when Helen sees @Haypsych sketchnotes on Twitter, they spike her curiosity to learn more about the ideas. It happened with "the "triad of empathy". Compassionate leadership goes beyond the first two aspects & embraces the third, empathetic concern. Read more.

The three most important principles when you're leading in a world where people work from home: 1) Establish agreements for when/how work gets done; 2) Create more connection points, not fewer; 3) Increase trust. Read the post.
#Covid19 has changed the nature of work; virtual & in real time have changed places, how people relate to each other is being recast & jobs are becoming more emotionally complex. Some in HR are calling for a new role "job decoder".
Is working virtually no longer just a response to the pandemic, but how your team is likely to operate more going forward? If so, you probably need to get much more intentional about team building for a virtual future. Here's some ideas.

There's so much Helen agrees with in these five lessons for leaders from performance psychologist @Jamil_Qureshi based based on his work with elite athletes. She particularly likes "purpose is never achieved, it's attained on a daily basis":
Reasons why the term "servant leadership", coined by Robert Greenleaf 50 years ago, should be retired: 1) it is now redundant; 2) It's never been the kind of phrase that enough people used in everyday conversation when describing leaders. Read more.

The more we "think" about something, the more connections we make & the better our "learning". How to create deep learning - this isn't just for formal education settings but for anyone who leads learning sessions & for those who want to deepen their own learning. TY @ImpactWales

#IHIForum

Helen did two sessions as a virtual presenter at #IHIForum this week. One was an Anglo-Swedish collaboration with @goranhenriks on their seven simple rules for transformation, aimed at leaders. They got a positive response to these principles from the North American audience.
Helen shared this having finished her second stint as a virtual presenter at #IHIForum, the biggest annual gathering for health & care improvement globally. The first session, with @KathrynPerera @oliverevans79 & @HughMcCaughey  was showcasing our NHS work on virtual collaboration to a mainly US audience.
